Dramatic chiaroscuro is the first thing that strikes when entering this house and sets a cinematic tone right away. While the eye tries to settle on one point – at least for a second – rushed by curiosity and the desire to notice every single detail, the feeling of secretly entering someone’s magical universe begins to creep in. Imagination starts to wonder of what kind of lives one might live in a place like this. Could it be the Tuscan residence of Robert Langdon, the character played by Tom Hanks from the The Da Vinci Code? Or perhaps a creative retreat for a historic novel writer? The dreamy haze over the the hills in the distance only spins the imagination further.

This apartment belongs to art collectors and guardians of the Florentine sculptural tradition, who chose this location for their countryside stays. Forty minutes’ drive from the city, it is situated in an elegant 18th-century villa with panoramic views over the hills with olive grows and sparsely sprinkled private villas. The tradition of chic country living dates back to the 16th century and to the refined tastes of the wealthy merchants and banker of Renaissance Florence. These villas were build for the pleasure of the eye and the soul, as well as for comfortable summer stays – a philosophy reflected in the panoramic views and the spacial layout, which allows for a smooth flow of air even during the hottest months.

One of our absolute favourite features in this apartment is its small, luminous tower – a sign of the villa’s noble origin – which now serves as a winter garden and is the perfect spot to contemplate the serene beauty of the Tuscan landscape.
